The world is losing species and biodiversity at an unprecedented rate. The causes go deep and the losses are driven by complex array of Social, Economic, Political, and Biological factors at different levels. The threats of biodiversity in botanical and forest reserves in Zambia is said to be less compared to those in open areas. Predominant ones include growing settlements, unplanned and unsustainable agricultural practices, woodfuel production, timber exploitation, soil erosion, deforestation, population growth, siltation, land degradation and desertification.

This section examines the underlying causes and provides information on the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in trying to address these problems in Zambia.
