Energy Policy

The policy aims “to promote optimum supply and utilisation of energy, especially indigenous forms, to facilitate the socio-economic development of the country and maintenance of a safe and healthy environment”. Broadly, the policies in the energy

sub-sectors are defined as follows:

  • Electricity: increase accessibility in its use as well as develop the most cost effective generating sites for domestic and export markets.
  • Coal: promote its use with due regard to environmental protection.
  •   Wood fuel: promote efficient production and utilisation of wood fuel.
  •   Petroleum: supply and utilise petroleum in the most efficient and costeffective manner.
  • New and Renewable Sources of Energy: promote wider application of proven
  • NRSE technologies in meeting the energy needs particularly for remote areas.
