The main aim of the Provincial Forestry Action Programme is to assist the Zambian Forestry Department to develop a replicable model of collaborative forest management for Zambia – or Joint Forest Management, as it is known locally. The Programme has invested heavily in building capacity of Forestry Department staff to support the JFM process. PFAP has also supported the development of an institutional base at community level that will enable forest-adjacent communities to be actively involved in forest management decisions and to share the benefits arising from such participation. The Programme is working in 8 pilot areas in 4 Provinces. The current phase of the Programme will run until June 2005.
